Publications

judicial officers learning about Evidence Act overview
Using the overview of the new Evidence Act

Qualified and experienced researchers produce College publications under the guidance of Judicial Editorial Committees. These practical guides are regularly updated, with material relevant to all Victorian jurisdictions.

Although publications are primarily written for judicial officers, all court parties will find them useful. Most College publications are available free online to the legal community, the public and the media.

About the publications

Online publications are easy to use. You can browse or search through them for information of interest. With the exception of the Sexual Offences Curriculum, which is restricted to organisations the College has specifically authorised, online publications are freely available to everyone.

College publications are only available online. The College does not prepare or provide print or CD-ROM versions, and you cannot save online publications to a computer.

Online publications use ‘frames’. If you cannot access framed websites, please email the College at info@judicialcollege.vic.edu.au for alternative access to the publications.

While viewing online publications, you can print out pages for closer reference. However, as the law and legal issues can change rapidly, we encourage users to return to the site for information rather than refer to old printouts.

Note: If you are using Internet Explorer and having difficulties accessing any of these publications, you may like to try the instructions in the following pdf document, instructions.

I've heard that the college has a great quiz on the new evidence act on your website. How do I find it? It's not on any of the publications pages and I've tried the search function.

We have both a quiz and a video on the new Evidence Act. To find them, go to the Uniform Evidence Resources page. On the left in the navigation list you will see links to both the Evidence Knowledge Test (quiz) and a video about the Evidence Act featuring Stephen Odgers, SC.

Being a retired Inspector with VicPol and trying to keep up to date with the new UEA I just quickly attempted the evidence test through the JCV website. I did not have the new Act before me but I think I got the first few Q's right. I recall a similar hearsay scenario we put to about 6 criminal practitioners while serving at Prahran Pros. Office. We got 6 different answers with no practitioner committing themselves as to whether the statements were admissable or not under the then hearsay rules!!
